# Managing Documentation Lifecycle

Run and oversee formal review, approval, and change cycles to drive collaboration and accountability.

## Overview

The **documentation lifecycle** defines the structured governance process by which documentation is reviewed, approved, maintained, and updated to ensure it remains accurate, compliant, and relevant throughout its use.

This lifecycle consists of interconnected and traceable stages designed to promote collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement across the organization’s documentation portfolio.

***

## Lifecycle Structure

The documentation lifecycle includes several stages. Depending on your organization’s needs, some or all of these steps may be skipped, enabled, or customized.

## Why the Lifecycle Matters

The documentation lifecycle helps organizations:

* Maintain high standards of **quality** and **compliance**
* Facilitate transparent **collaboration** and clear **communication**
* **Minimize risks** associated with outdated or inaccurate information
* Support **audit readiness** and **regulatory** compliance

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://interfacing.gitbook.io/interfacing-help-files/document-control/managing-documentation-lifecycle.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
