## Understanding Applications

Applications support the processes and activities that help your organization operate effectively. For easier navigation, they are organized into a simple hierarchy:

* **Applications**

  Top-level containers that represent a business process or functional area.
* **Categories** (optional)

  Groups within an application used to organize related modules.
* **Modules**

  User-facing entry points for completing tasks or accessing specific functionality.

***

## Working with Applications

Follow the steps below to browse and interact with your applications:

{% step %}

### Browsing Applications

The **Apps** module offers two primary ways to browse content.

#### :list-tree:  App Tree

* Use the **App Tree** to navigate applications through a structured hierarchy.
  * Expand items to view categories and modules; collapse items to reduce visual clutter.

{% hint style="info" %}
You can close, resize, or change the display mode of the **App Tree**:

* To **close** the panel, select the **X** icon in the upper-right corner.
* To **resize** the panel, hover over its edge and drag.
* To **switch modes** ([**Auto-Collapse**](#user-content-fn-1)[^1] or [**Pinned**](#user-content-fn-2)[^2]), select the ![](https://1488562728-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FTx7AmE0d2Q4ja20EYjF5%2Fuploads%2Fb3yDXfhwmvJjth6RRtrC%2Fmenu_open_16dp_000000_FILL0_wght300_GRAD0_opsz20.svg?alt=media\&token=70de1e66-5b0f-4a9a-b006-f53845df63d6) icon.
  {% endhint %}

#### :rectangle-history:  Gallery View

* Use the **Gallery View** to browse applications in a visual, card-based layout.
  * Each card includes:

    * **Item Name**
    * **Description** (if available)
    * **Thumbnail**

Thumbnail Behavior

The thumbnail provides an at-a-glance view and varies depending on the type of item:

:folder-open:  Category

The thumbnail displays one of the following, depending on configuration:

A folder icon, containing either a custom icon (if defined) or the default Apps icon.

A custom image.

:sidebar:  Module

The thumbnail displays a preview of the associated form:

Initially, the preview shows the form layout without data.

After opening the module, it updates to show the data available to you.

* Select a card to open the corresponding category or module.

{% hint style="success" icon="lightbulb" %}
**Tip:** Use the **breadcrumb trail** at the top of the workspace to navigate back through levels.

* Select the **three-dot** ( :ellipsis: ) icon to reveal any levels hidden from the trail.
  {% endhint %}

***

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Finding Applications

Use the **Keyword Filter** to quickly find an application, category, or module. Results update automatically as you type, showing only matching items.

{% endstep %}

### Opening & Using Modules

You can open modules from the **App Tree**, **Gallery View**, or **breadcrumb trail**.

* Modules opened from the **App Tree** or **breadcrumb trail** appear in **full-screen view**.
* Modules opened from the **Gallery View** appear in the **side panel**.

{% hint style="success" icon="lightbulb" %}
**Tip:** Use the **More Options** ( :ellipsis-vertical: ) menu in the **App Tree** or **Gallery View** to control how a module opens. You can choose to open it in **full screen**, in the **side panel**, or in a **new browser tab**.
{% endhint %}

Depending on the module, you may see:

* a **standalone form**, or
* a **starter form** that launches a workflow upon submission.

{% hint style="info" %}
A form is a screen used to view, enter, or update information needed for a task or workflow.
{% endhint %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://interfacing.gitbook.io/interfacing-help-files/end-users/exploring-apps.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
