# Using the Side Panel

Learn how the panel behaves across modules and how to interact with it effectively.

## Overview

The **side panel** is a collapsible panel on the right side of the screen that allows you to view detailed information about selected items—such as documentation or tasks—without leaving your current workspace.

## Using Overlay Panels

Overlay panels open on top of the current side panel, allowing you to view related items in more detail without losing your place. You can open an overlay panel by double-clicking an item or selecting the **Open in Side Panel** (<img src="https://1488562728-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FTx7AmE0d2Q4ja20EYjF5%2Fuploads%2Fv5qSzBbkuB4q6tt2RzOj%2FIMS-V16-NAV-Library-Icons-22.svg?alt=media&amp;token=f3a78b5b-76e9-493a-8795-805f78ba4335" alt="" data-size="line">) icon.

#### How It Works:

* Displays detailed information for the selected item.
* Retains standard side panel functionality, including resizing and full-screen mode.
* Use **Back** ( <i class="fa-arrow-left">:arrow-left:</i> ) or **Close** ( <i class="fa-xmark">:xmark:</i> ) to return to the previous view.
* Restores the original panel state when closed.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://interfacing.gitbook.io/interfacing-help-files/end-users/using-the-side-panel.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
