# Viewing Documentation

Find, view, and interact with your organization’s documentation.

## Overview

The **Library** is the central repository for organizational knowledge and documentation, including processes, regulations, risks, performance metrics, and more. Use it to browse, search, and open content relevant to your work.

***

## Accessing Documentation

You can access documentation from several areas across the platform.

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="From the Library" %}
Use this path to explore the full documentation repository.

* Select the **Library** tile in the side navigation bar.
* Browse using the **Library Tree** or **List View**, or refine results using the search and filter tools.

## Understanding Documentation Views

Documentation is available in two views, each sourced from a different content database.

<i class="fa-toggle-large-off">:toggle-large-off:</i>  **Published View** (Default)

* Displays the most recently **published** version of each item.
* Intended for general users requiring **stable**, **validated content**.

<i class="fa-toggle-large-on">:toggle-large-on:</i> **Latest View** (Restricted Access)

* Displays the most **current** version of each item, including both published items and drafts in progress.
* Intended for administrators and content editors actively **reviewing** or **updating material**.

{% hint style="danger" %}
During **Phase 1**, only the **Published View** is available.
{% endhint %}

## Viewing Documentation

The **Details Panel** (also called **Details View**) is the primary interface for reading documentation.

<figure><img src="https://1488562728-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FTx7AmE0d2Q4ja20EYjF5%2Fuploads%2FB9bk3BBsekU7tyGzmXQV%2FIMS-V16-Library-View-5.png?alt=media&amp;token=f83fb74a-0213-4346-89f5-4e328c3208c8" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

{% hint style="success" %}
**Tip:** You can resize the panel, expand it to full screen, or close it as needed.

* See [**Using the Side Panel**](/interfacing-help-files/end-users/using-the-side-panel.md) for more information.
  {% endhint %}

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Reviewing Metadata

Use the metadata at the top of the panel to confirm you are viewing the correct object and version.

1. **SSN & Name**: The object's system-generated serial number, along with its full name or descriptive title.
2. **Version & Status**: The current version number and publication status (Draft, Published, Sent for Approval, etc.).

{% hint style="warning" %}
Use the **Version** dropdown to switch versions or access the version history (based on permissions).

* For more information, see [**Versioning**](/interfacing-help-files/end-users/library/exploring-the-details-panel/versioning.md).
  {% endhint %}

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Exploring Sections

Documentation is organized into scrollable sections. Use the **Section Navigator** (a vertical row of markers on the right side of the panel) to move quickly between sections.

* <mark style="color:red;">The highlighted marker indicates the section currently in view.</mark>
* <mark style="color:red;">Hover over a marker to preview the section title.</mark>
* <mark style="color:red;">Select a marker to open the full list of sections and jump to another area.</mark>

<mark style="color:red;">**\[Note to M**</mark><mark style="color:red;">**2**<mark style="color:red;"><mark style="color:red;">**: Should the items in red be included only in the Using the Side Panel section?]**</mark>

<p align="center"><kbd><strong>IMAGE</strong></kbd></p>

{% hint style="success" %}
For a breakdown of common sections, see [**Exploring the Details Panel**.](/interfacing-help-files/drafts/searching-for-objects-in-the-library/library/exploring-the-details-panel.md)
{% endhint %}

### Using Overlay Panels <a href="#overlay-panel-behavior-in-process-maps" id="overlay-panel-behavior-in-process-maps"></a>

Use overlay panels to view related documentation (such as activities in a process) without leaving the main view.

<figure><img src="https://1488562728-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FTx7AmE0d2Q4ja20EYjF5%2Fuploads%2FtXkj1a3fmUurNlkImTP3%2FIMS-V16-Library-View-8.gif?alt=media&amp;token=5b28eee3-459d-4477-b9c9-f54bc967934b" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

{% hint style="info" %}
You can open up to **two overlays at once** to compare or reference multiple items.

* For more information, see [**Using Overlay Panels**](/interfacing-help-files/end-users/using-the-side-panel.md#overlay-panel-behavior-in-process-maps).
  {% endhint %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://interfacing.gitbook.io/interfacing-help-files/drafts/searching-for-objects-in-the-library/library.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
